ISF Agriculture under pressure

(The International Seed Federation represents the interests of the mainstream of the seed industry at a global level through interaction and dialogue with public and private institutions that have an impact on international seed trade)

Agriculture under pressure
To keep pace with population growth it is estimated that in the next 40 years food production must equal the amount produced over the last 12,000 years, and it must be achieved in the face of climate change, limited land, water and fossil fuels. Through plant breeding the seed industry has met and will continue to meet the challenge of increasing agricultural production. Source:

Jordan Trials 2011

On March 14th and 15th 2011 Bakker Brothers organised its 4th annual Middle East trials. Over 100 delegates were invited to participate.

The first day a seminar was organized. This included a very interesting lecture from Dr. Fuad Salameh regarding 'Tomato Cultivation'.
The second day the trial fields were visited. These consisted of in total 20 tunnels (with the newest tomato, pepper, eggplant, cucumber and bean material) and 3 open field areas (with the newest squash, eggplant and bean material).

Very promising material was selected by BB in close cooperation with its distributors. Most of the new material will go into semi-commercial stage this year.

Seed Valley

Seed Valley : the international centre for plant breeding & seed technology

Situated between Enkhuizen and Warmenhuizen in the province of North Holland, Seed Valley forms the home base for dozens of innovative companies. In this region, improved plant varieties are developed, particularly for the vegetable and ornamental flower sectors. Seeds, cuttings and young plants are exported to clients all over the world from Seed Valley.

Current issues – such as healthy nutrition, sustainable production, climate change and food shortages – play important roles in the continuous improvement of plant varieties. The high-quality breeding expertise puts The Netherlands on the map in the search for sustainable solutions for tomorrow’s world. The combination of international allure and the no-nonsense attitude of the people of North Holland determines the character of the sector. Most of the organisations in Seed Valley were originally family businesses, which can be seen in the social business culture. Teamwork, personal growth and a healthy working and living environment are essential in this respect.

The mission of the cooperation within Seed Valley is the reinforcement of the economic position and anchoring of the cluster in North Holland. Stichting Seed Valley hopes to achieve this by investing in its image, the influx of skilled workers, innovation and the sharing of expertise. (Source: Seed Valley)
